Higher Education:

From Classroom to Server Room Mobility Done Right

Higher Education has some of the highest demand for Bring Your Own Device, but also faces the greatest risks and challenges in implementing it. Faculty, staff, students, and parents all demand permission to bring and use personal wireless devices on campus. The typical college student today has between two and five personal devices, including smartphone, music player, pc, tablet, and portable game console. In the face of this device invasion, the valuable campus network resources and data must be protected from unauthorised and malicious use.

Extreme Networks Mobile IAM enables BYOD with complete security for the campus network and data. The context-based policy engine controls network usage based on up to 50 factors including user, device, location, and application. So high bandwidth can be provided to staff and students using VDI. High bandwidth can also be allocated to video for instructional use. Global classrooms on remote campuses as well as distance learning in general are fully supported. But administrative information is fully protected.

Extreme Networks guarantees the Mobile IAM implementation; it is smooth to install and won't require any additional staffing to the already-stretched higher education IT department. The network and all devices are managed with a single pane of glass into a single database. Devices can be automatically provisioned based on the pre-determined policy.

The Twin Challenges Facing Higher Education

Higher education institutions face the twin challenges of rising information technology costs coupled with the need to avoid technological obsolescence and provide the reliable infrastructure that is necessary for a highly-connected learning experience that engages students for better learning outcomes. Sophisticated learning management systems, enhanced video, online-collaborative tools and the advent of the consumerization of IT have many universities scrambling to keep pace. With distance education rapidly become main-stream, online and blended learning methodologies are gaining firm footholds in the curricula and are quickly becoming an essential revenue stream for institutions. In many ways, the networks that are architected today will become the universities of tomorrow. The choices made to help maximize existing infrastructure and leverage future investments become decisions of strategic importance.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Many higher education institutions are looking to deploy Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) initiatives to enable application delivery. Purpose-built for virtualization, OneFabric provides the stable, high-quality infrastructure to enable universities to realize the benefits of lower cost of ownership, simplified management and greater control of its networked computers - without compromising the student and faculty experience. Extreme Networks works with the leading complementary technology providers in the higher education industry, including Uniden, vmware, and Citrix to name just a few.

Learning Management Systems

More and more higher education faculty depend completely on the wireless network as part of their lesson plans through the free source e-learning software platform know as Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). Extreme Networks provides the robust performance and reliable wireless coverage that is essential to supporting Learning Management System (LMS) applications that allow for the administration, documentation, tracking and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs and training content.

K-12 Education:

Manage Any Device, Anywhere...For a Great Learning Environment Everywhere

Pressure for Bring-Your-Own-Device has been especially strong among K-12 schools. Cost pressures, parent and student demand, new styles of teaching, and on-line testing have all had an important role in driving this need. At the same time, insuring compliance with Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), as well as maintaining security and preventing inequities without taxing the school's limited IT resources, present major challenges in implementing BYOD for K-12 schools.

Extreme Networks Mobile IAM controls access based on user, device, location, application - in fact, it can take into account up to 50 different considerations. So a teacher using video for classroom instruction can get high bandwidth, while students in the cafeteria can be limited in their YouTube viewing. High bandwidth can be provided for VDI use by the staff, while entertainment devices such PlayStation Portable may be barred from the network entirely.

All this is easily managed by the IT staff without additional resources. Mobile IAM uses a single database and provides a single pane of glass for network management including BYOD device management. Teachers and students can be automatically provisioned when they first bring their devices to school. Network usage is simply monitored by user, device, location, and application to insure full compliance with AUP and CIPA.

Extreme Networks offers leading K-12 network solutions in terms of manageability via a pane of glass, security for BYOD, and integrity through fault-tolerance and life-time warranty.

1-1 Computing

As many school districts move to 1:1 computing, they need the ability to deliver networked services to large numbers of computers and tablets without slowing down the network. With Extreme Networks, school districts can accommodate and manage both district-owned and student-owned devices into these 1:1 computing programs.

Digital Citizenship

K12 school districts are making a strong push to deliver digital citizenship courses online. These courses educate faculty and students on the proper use of the technology, including how to identify credible sources of information, proper use of social media, and online bullying awareness. Districts are then allowing specific devices and application access based on the student's successful completion of the digital citizenship course. Having access to network traffic utilization data helps verify that district content filters are performing as expected and students are being good stewards of the technology. The Extreme Networks network forensics can verify proper or improper use of the resources for granting or removing expanded access rights.

Online Testing

With the flexible network cotrol offered by Extreme Networks, classroom networking can be set up to disallow students' laptops' access to the Internet, but allow secure access to the school's intranet to take an on-line exam. In the same classroom, the teacher's laptop can be granted access to all district resources as well as the Internet.

Digital Textbooks

Digital textbooks can require high speed video streaming and other high bandwidth resources. With Extreme Networks, you can configure the network to provide digital textbooks in the classroom with the bandwidth they require, which still limiting or preventing high speed streaming of music or games to students in the cafeteria, for example.

Healthcare:

Mobility Made Safe and Simple

Doctors are bringing mobile devices to the workplace at an alarming pace and are seeking to use them in patient care. Unrestricted usage could jeopardize private patient information as well as place an unacceptable burden on the network and IT resources. Similarly, both patients and guests request to use their personal wireless devices while they are in the hospital. All of these devices potentially share a network environment with critical hospital wired and wireless devices including location tracking systems, telemetry, and biomed devices; each with their independent needs for security, quality of service, data access, and bandwidth. How does an IT organization provide the flexible resources required to manage a comprehensive BYOD strategy while maintain costs, control, and security?

With Extreme Networks Mobile IAM as part of the OneFabric architecture, network resources are allocated based on up to 50 different considerations, including user, device type, location, and application. Mobile IAM dynamically maintains a list of authorised users, devices, and locations to provide zero-effort onboarding and predictable, secure application delivery.

A doctor can get high bandwidth to his iPad for VDI and video and securely check on patient data.

Medical devices will get high priority and the reliable bandwidth that they need.

Guests can easily log on to the network, but their bandwidth will be controlled and they will get no access to hospital data and devices.

Healthcare organizations are increasingly dependent on best in class technology for addressing the demands of critical patient workflows in order to provide the visibility, control, automation and flexibility to seamlessly support Meaningful Use initiatives. OneFabric from Extreme Networks provides all of these capabilities in an easily managed single pane of glass, without putting additional demands on the hospital's limited IT resources.
